Disaster at sea

The Tsunami has once again demonstrated the fury of nature and the tragedy it can cause. It showed us that nature could be as harsh as it is benevolent. The Tsunami, an extraordinary calamity of unprecedented proportions, is a reminder that no matter how much wealth or power man acquires, he is still at the mercy of the elements. The havoc created by tsunami can never be forgotten. The most powerful earthquake in 40 years quickly turned into one of the worst disasters in a century, as walls of water crashed ashore across South Asia. The number of human casualties, mostly children and women, is horrible and is increasing with the passage of time. Every person you meet in the tsunami-hit area has his own story to tell but no one is there to listen him or her.

In poor countries, living is so hand-to-mouth that there is scant time to think about the distant future. This dreadful disaster of such a vast dimension has led to outbreak of diseases like cholera, gastroenteritis, hepatitis B, malaria, and dengue fever. It (tsunami) ravaged some of the most fragile economies in Burma, Sri Lanka, and Indonesia.

Grog and me have mysteriously appeared on a strange island today. We wondered why for a bit, then we forgot about it. The weather was cloudy. The first thing we did was use our knife to make a wooden spear. Then I went and gathered some sticks as Grog tried to catch fish in the stream that was nearby where we appeared. Eventually Grog caught a fish, but we couldn?t light a fire, so we ate the fish raw.

Yet another cloudy day here. We tried to make a raft but we couldn?t get any large logs. Grog went to explore the island while I tried to catch fish. He came back about 1 ? hours later then told me that there was no place to hide or no way to get off this island. Eventually I caught a fish but, again, we could not light a fire. So, again, we had raw fish.

We had to make a new spear as the first one was now broken, while Grog did that, I went to see if there was any other source of food on this island, but while I was looking, I found some flint! Although I didn?t see many other animals, I didn?t really care. I went back to our makeshift camp and told Grog about my discovery. He was just as pleased as I was, and that night we thoroughly enjoyed our cooked fish.

It rained heavily today. It started right after sunrise and did not quit the entire day. Unfortunately for whatever reason, we could not catch a fish. So we went out to kill one of the small animals on the island. But they had all hid from the rain. The rain was so heavy that we couldn?t light a fire. It was miserable for us today.

Woke up in the middle of the night sliding away in the heavy mud. When it was finally bright enough to see, Grog and I had discovered that our ?camp? had washed away and almost took us with it! We began rebuilding as soon as we could; about mid-day it was raining light enough for us to work adequately well, seeing that we hadn?t eaten for a day and a half now. We rebuilt our camp about 500 feet up the stream. Afterwards we both tried to catch some fish but we could not despite our best efforts.

We did very little today seeing that we were quite hungry. We could not light a fire to keep warm because the sticks were still too wet. Luckily it was not raining anymore. We both hunted for fish but, again, we could not catch any.

I woke up in the middle of the night feeling quite hungry. Yet, thank all the deities, we caught a small fish. Grog and I ate ravenously. So, after feeling like I had more energy, I went to explore the interior of the island some more. Amazingly I found a small cave just big enough to get into, but on the inside there were 2 generously sized caverns that would allow both of us to sleep in it. Almost immediately after I told Grog about the cave, he caught another fish! I started to think that we might not die here after all.

Natural disasters like earthquakes, tornado, tsunami and floods happen more frequently nowadays. There are many reasons why they occur, but the main one is related to human activity on Earth which often has a negative impact on our environment.

All kinds of disasters are usually very damaging. Many dwellings, roads and even whole streets and cities are ruined. The number of victims usually terrifies as hundreds or even thousands of people get injured or die in disasters. However, each disaster has a different nature.

For example, an earthquake is the result of the tectonic plates’ movement which leads to the shaking of a certain area on land. Earthquakes destroy buildings and people usually become victims because they get stuck or killed under the rubble.

Tornado is also a natural disaster which looks like an enormous column of the wind which lifts cars, bicycles, furniture and many other things. It is also called a twister and it can be very dangerous if touches the surface of the ground or water.

Flood in its turn happens when rivers burst their banks. Most extended floods damage cities and wash away whole populated places. Tsunami is another natural disaster which arises as a series of huge waves caused by underwater earthquakes.

Thus, there are many natural disasters which are dangerous for all of us. We should be careful and treat our planet better in order not to die with it.

Natural disaster –

Environment –

To ruin/to destroy –

Under the rubble –

To burst the banks –

By Xavier Taucher Room 12 Meadowbank School, Auckland, New Zealand.

Not long ago in a small Australian town Lived a new born boy named jack his mother  and father were very nice to him. Then about 2 months after he was born his mother died of a heart attack the boy was too little to understand what had happened. When he got older (about 8 ) his dad told him what had happened “now I get it” Said Jack. he was sad about what had happened, but he got over it. When he was about 9 him and his dad went out fishing on a yought for about a day or two. Then after about 30 minutes the little boy fell off the boatL “Help” he said, but his father aventurelly got him back on the boat. After about 2 hours a storm started to come a big storm swepped through and they fell of their boat and were struggling to find a place to go in the morning they got swepped on to a small island.

It was by the Auckland islands down in between Stewart Island New Zealand and Antarctica.

You could see from the sand that the island would never have been discovered before. It had many caves and skeletons and skulls. When they got their breath back they went through one of the caves and they found a big heap of penguins they were all dead they. “Dad I’m hungry” said Jack

“I suppose you’ll have to eat the penguins said his father”, Oh I suppose I’ll eat them. A few hours later they moved on and found a small little shack lying there. “No one lives there” his father said, “well I think someone does live there” said Jack they entered the house and they found some canned pears and a knife and opened the can “yum”, said Jack. After they had eaten wellllllll there dinner they went out and found a place on a rock to sleep. In the morning they found a cave, they had to sing a song to get in there, it was a horrible song really. They got in to the cave there was some water at the top of the roof,”that’s crazy” said his father.

Tsunami
There are various natural disasters in the world and tsunami is one of them. Some people call it a tidal wave or a seismic sea wave.
The main reason of tsunami is a submarine earthquake, when there is an underwater landslide. However, the volcanic eruptions can also cause it. Some countries and regions are especially prone to this disaster, for example, China, Japan, Chile, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Philippines.
The biggest tsunami in the history took place in 1958 at Alaskan Lituya Bay. The force of wave then reached 1720 feet above sea level. Normally, ocean tsunamis reach heights of over 100 feet. Even the mildest walls of water can cause widespread destruction.
Another notable tsunami took place on the Indonesian island of Sumatra in December, 2004. A strong earthquake displaced the ocean floor off the island. More than 200, 000 people were killed within a few hours.
For better understanding of tsunami, we should know what the earthquake is. Dozens of tectonic plates support the earth. These large floating pieces are constantly moving. The earthquake happens when two plates become stuck. Unfortunately, nothing can be done to prevent tsunami, except monitoring minor weather and geological changes.
Scientists work hard to understand where and how the future tsunamis develop. They also record the size and the frequency of previous tsunamis to make all the necessary calculations. Today, the best way to fight this disaster is to understand the ocean floor structure and to learn the tsunami data. For civil people, the best way of defense is early warning that allows them to find the shelter on higher ground.

It is a natural event or occurrence where a piece of land (or area) that is usually dry land, suddenly gets submerged under water. Some floods can occur suddenly and recede quickly.

When floods happen in an area that people live, the water carries along objects like houses, bridges, cars, furniture and even people. It can wipe away farms, trees and many more heavy items.

Floods occur at irregular intervals and vary in size, duration and the affected area.

In less than an hour, strong rain can turn an ankle deep creek into an unstoppable 30-foot-high swell that overpowers everything in its path.

Floods occur all over the world. Causes of floods include hurricanes, broken levees or dams, rapidly thawing snow, ice jams, and heavy slow moving rain or repeated rains. A flood can happen in a few minutes, hours, days, or over weeks.

No matter how quickly it happens or the cause, flooding is deadly. Floods kill more people and causes more damage than other severe weather related events. Many die trying to drive or walk through a flooded area. Just six inches of water can knock a person off their feet. Just two feet of water can carry a car away.

(Natural disasters)

Mother Nature can act rather scary sometimes. Almost every day TV channels, radio and newspapers report on natural disasters striking different parts of the world. Scientists say that earthquakes, tornados, floods, droughts, tsunamis, landslides and hurricanes are happening more frequently nowadays. Global warming, pollution and growing industrialization lead to imbalance in our echo-system.

A natural disaster can be defined as an uncontrollable extreme disruption which causes ecological and financial damage and victims of vulnerable population. Sometimes the events can be predicted by special meteorological warning systems and they often happen in the same geographical area because they are related to climate and physical characteristics of the region. For example, Florida is constantly suffering from tornadoes and hurricanes, and Japan – from earthquakes.

An earthquake happens when tectonic plates of the earth move and they make the area shake violently. According to the Richter scale the magnitude of earthquakes is measured from 1 to 10 points. The most powerful earthquake was recorded in 1960 in Chile, its magnitude was 9.5.

Volcanic eruptions occur when hot red magma erupts from the earth’s crust and flows from the top of the volcano. It also throws volcano ashes into the air which are harmful to inhale for human beings and animals.

A tsunami is a series of dangerous huge ocean waves, usually caused by underwater earthquakes. This natural disaster attacks the shore all of a sudden and often results in thousands of deaths. The height of the waves can reach 30 metres.

Flooding is another natural disaster. Floods happen when the water level in rivers and seas becomes too high. Sometimes flash floods can even wash away whole villages.

During extremely hot dry summers our world usually suffers from vast forest fires and severe droughts. Wildfires are especially dangerous in windy weather when they spread very easily. Droughts may result in famine because the land becomes dry and people can’t grow any plants and vegetables on it.

A tornado is an enormous column of twisting wind that moves very fast and destroys houses, raises in the air and throws people, animals and heavy things. Hurricanes and tornados are very common in America and the Atlantic Ocean.

Landslides happen when earth and rocks on slopes become loose or water-laden and they fall down the hills or mountains.

People face great problems after disasters: the water is usually infected, the communication lines (electricity, telephone) are often damaged, most of the buildings and property are destroyed, agricultural crops are also damaged. Natural disasters are great tragedies to many countries and nations. They take a lot of people’s lives. Thousands of people become homeless, unemployed. They need medical and psychological help.

Natural Disasters

Natural disasters are very dangerous phenomena. Natural disaster may happen separately or be the consequence of another natural disaster. In most cases they kill many people and destroy places of living. Nature is very powerful so often people can do nothing to withstand it. There are a lot of types of natural disasters. They are earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, floods, tsunami, tornadoes, droughts and so on.

Tsunami is a very powerful disaster. It is a displacement of a large volume of water. The term “tsunami” is borrowed from the Japanese language and literally means “harbour wave”. Tsunami often happen in Japan and one of the most powerful tsunami happened in Japan in 2011. Thousands of people were killed, injured or missing.

Tsunami often follows earthquakes. An earthquake is one more natural disaster. It is a sudden release of energy in the Earth’s crust. People know about the earthquakes by shaking or displacement of the ground. Earthquakes, just as all natural disasters, can kill a lot of people and destroy buildings and roads. For example, the Great East Japan earthquake that caused the tsunami is one of the most powerful earthquakes ever happened in the world since 1900.

Fortunately, people have invented many systems which warn about coming natural disasters and they keep developing these inventions and systems. Warning systems and timely evacuation help to avoid many deaths and injuries.

(Natural disasters in Russia.)

disaster

Not all natural disasters are common in Russia, yet some regions are more at risk than others. Central Russia suffers from forest fires and river floods, while the Far East, North Caucasus and Eastern Siberia are prone to earthquakes. The regions are seismically dangerous.

In 1995 a strong earthquake on the island of Sakhalin wiped out the town of Neftegorsk in just 17 seconds. More than 2000 people were buried under the ruins. Neftegorsk was never rebuilt.

Another tragedy happened in 2012. Ten Black Sea resort towns and port cities, including Krymsk, Gelendzhik and Novorossiysk, were flooded after heavy rainstorms. The disaster occurred at night when everyone was asleep, and as a result, 7000 apartment blocks, hospitals, schools and stadiums were destroyed.

Summer and autumn forest fires are a common thing across Siberia and the Far East. They are started by the human factor (careless people), heatwaves or the lack of rains. Wildfires can spread over thousands of square kilometers and last for months because fires are often miles away from villages and towns and it is very expensive and difficult to transport firefighters to those areas.

Natural disasters in Russia can be really powerful and devastating, and many of them occur because of the negative impact of people on our environment.

Natural Disasters –

Earthquakes

earth

An earthquake is the shaking of the surface of the Earth, resulting from the sudden release of energy in the Earth’s lithosphere that creates seismic waves.

The seismicity, or seismic activity, of an area is the frequency, type and size of earthquakes experienced over a period of time.

Floods

2

A flood is an overflow of water that submerges land that is usually dry.

Most floods take hours or even days to develop, giving residents time to prepare or evacuate.

Avalanches

3

Avalanches are masses of snow, ice, and rocks that fall rapidly down a mountainside.

Volcanoes

4

A volcano is an opening in Earth’s crust that allows molten rock from beneath the crust to reach the surface.

This molten rock is called magma when it is beneath the surface and lava when it erupts or flows from a volcano.

Tsunami

5

A tsunami is a series of great sea waves caused by an underwater earthquake, landslide, or volcanic eruption.

Tornadoes

“It’s great to be at sea together”, said Max. Max and his sisters, Amelia and Caroline were sailing on a cruise ship.
Max put Amelia to sleep and went to find Caroline. He quickly scurried down to the engine room and found Caroline bending down over the engine. Suddenly, Caroline and Max’s shoes started to feel wet and squidgy. The two children looked at each other panic stricken. The boat was sinking!
“AMELIA!” He sprinted up the stairs and found Amelia, lying there smiling in her sleep.
He jumped down the yellow raft and swam with his still in her arms. Suddenly a rip carried Amelia away!
In the morning he was woken up by the waves crashing down on the sand. He saw a faint outline of a person swimming about 100 yards from where he was standing. It was his sister CAROLINE! Max asked her where she had been all night, but the only answer she got was the closing of her eyes as she fell asleep.
After she woke, Max jumped up and shouted.
“I HAVE IT! When I was searching the Island before you woke up, I found a box!
Inside the box was a mobile phone! They dialled their mum’s phone number.
“MUM! It’s Caroline and Max here”
“Mum — the ship had an engine failure and it sank. We all got off the boat alright, but Amelia fell out of my arms and we don’t know where she is.”
There was a long pause from the other end of the phone.
“Ok, are you still there? I have just called the police and they have already sent a boat and a helicopter out to come and find you. They could be hours or days but are you sure you will be …” then the phone cut out.
The 2 siblings fell asleep holding each other’s hand in comfort. The next morning Caroline woke up and lay watching the water drift by. Suddenly a helicopter zoomed over her head, waking Max up from his sleep. They threw down the rope and it landed in the middle of the ocean.
The two children were in the helicopter with their parents.
The two way radio rang in the captain’s room of the helicopter. It was the police boat.
“Hello, have you rescued Caroline and Max”
“Yes, they are in the helicopter now.”
“We have found Amelia on a near by island!”
Minutes later they were hovering in the air and could see a tiny black speck on the sand. It was AMELIA!
The family were all together, relieved and happy.
