Distance learning pros and cons эссе

Pros and cons of online education.

The world is a dynamic system that gets changed every now and then. The pandemic has set its own rules that we must obey and has affected all aspects of social life. The education has also had to adapt to the new conditions. That is why studying online is a common practice at all educational institutions (levels) nowadays. However, students have rather controversial opinions about this topic. Some believe that online studying is much more convenient and better than full-time education. Still others consider a face-to-face studying the best way to learn and to teach. Today I will try to elaborate on this up-to-date issue.

In my personal view, online studying is a leader of tomorrow and people should not be so critical about it. Firstly, this type of education helps you to allocate your time in the most suitable way and easily find balance between relaxation and work. Secondly, you can study from any place, which means that you do not have to spend time getting to school or university. In addition, I can tell from my personal experience that online education has helped me to reduce stress. This major change in lifestyle has had an enormous effect on my mental health.

On the other hand, many people claim that while studying at home, students become reckless and do not take this type of education seriously. Such careless behavior leads to getting low marks and not succeeding at an educational process. What is more, the supporters of face-to-face studying say that online schooling is not efficient as it depends on many factors like the availability of the Internet connection. The presence of other family members near the student can also affect the process of learning. The last thing is that primary school pupils find it difficult to work with high technology and operate with computers without the control of their parents.

Mainly, I do not support this idea. When the person is responsible and understands the significance of education, he tries his best to achieve high results so online studying cannot distract him from it. Exactly the opposite, the concerned person tries to take all necessary knowledge, attends all available courses and does not get lazy. He still feels in charge of his future. Yet I agree that this type of studying may not fit everybody owing to age. That is why online education should be primarily for high school students.

Overall, I can tell that the topic of learning from home is disputable. I personally believe that this area has to be developed and perfected. The society has a wrong mindset of being afraid of something new.  We should be open instead.  That is why I am of the opinion that from now on online education is an important part of everyone’s life.

Introduction

Computer and information technologies have significantly affected all spheres of human life. These technologies have also changed the field of education, since the improvement and development of this direction is one of the main mechanisms that make up the public life of the United States. Thus, a new form of distance learning has appeared in modern human life, which, along with the traditional form, has taken an important place in our society. This kind of training allows not only to study but also to improve the qualification level of its users.

The research paper offered to the reader is devoted to the concept of distance learning, as well as its advantages and disadvantages. The question of the advantages and disadvantages of distance learning has been in the focus of research attention especially against the background of a general quarantine, which justifies the actuality of this topic. To facilitate the preparation of this final project, the author formulates the problem in several forms of proposals, namely:

  1. Analysis of the phenomenon of distance learning.

  2. Analysis of the pros and cons of distance learning.

This study focuses on analyzing the pros and cons of distance learning, as well as predicting its further application. The results of this study are of practical use, because they will be of interest to students and teachers who are choosing whether to switch to remote learning.

Sawsan Abuhammad, the Assistant Professor in Jordan University of Science and Technology, in his article “Barriers to distance learning during the COVID-19 outbreak: A qualitative review from parents’ perspective” (2020) states the following. The author claims that many parents have faced serious problems in the process of distance learning of their children. The author believes that the barriers that arose among the parents were of a personal, financial and technical nature. The author also states that these barriers need to be eliminated with the help of some changes, including through communication with other parents and students.

The author used the social network Facebook to recognize local groups, as well as keywords including distance learning, parents and Jordan. The author used a general qualitative method and analyzed all the messages and posts of parents related to this topic. This article was written by the author in order to describe and clarify the ideas of parents about the obstacles to distance learning during the coronavirus crisis (Abuhammad). The main audience of this article is parents, as well as persons representing the government and making decisions regarding distance learning. Thus, in the process of distance learning, many parents have various barriers that need to be overcome. We intend to use this source to demonstrate the problems and difficulties of distance learning.

Živko Bojović, Petar D. Bojović, Dušan Vujošević and Jelena Šuh, in their article “Education in times of crisis: Rapid transition to distance learning” (2020), state the following. They claim that the pandemic crisis has a negative effect on the standard of living and education. The authors believe that violation can pose a serious threat, and therefore a working model is needed that will allow switching from the traditional form of training to distance learning quickly and painlessly. The authors also argue that distance learning is acceptable on a long-term basis, if it is implemented correctly.

The authors of this article used a modeling method that allowed them to determine organizational and technical solutions for maintaining the quality of teaching. In addition, the authors used the method of comparative analysis of the survey data of students and teachers. The article was written by the authors in order to facilitate the transition from traditional learning to distance learning against the background of the pandemic and quarantine (Bojović et al.). The model developed by them has many advantages and thoughtful solutions. The main audience of this article is teachers and other representatives of educational institutions who face the difficult task of implementing distance learning. We intend to use this article to better understand the essence of distance learning, as well as its advantages.

Tim Surma and Paul A. Kirschner in their article, “Technology enhanced distance learning should not forget how learning happens” (2020), state the following. They believe that the traditional type of learning is under threat due to the accelerated process of adapting the traditional learning process to a new, remote one. They argue that modern technologies are both a danger and a chance for education to reach a completely new level.

The authors of this article used the methods of surveys and interviews to find out the attitude of students and teachers to the new form of education, and to track the progress in learning. This article was written by the authors in order to provide the importance of clear guidelines and optimal use of distance learning technologies (Surma and Kirschner). Moreover, the authors identified important principles that will help students get used to a new form of education, for example, feedback and an individual approach. The main audiences of this article are students, parents and teachers who will be interested in this information for the successful implementation of distance learning. We intend to use this article to understand the possible future prospects of the distance learning method.

John Traxler, the Professor of Digital Learning in the Institute of Education at the University of Wolverhampton, in his article, “Distance Learning—Predictions and Possibilities” (2018), states the following. The author claims that the definition of distance learning is not clear, but vague and changeable. The author considers the process of distance learning in a global context and studies the issue of adaptation and implementation of distance learning. The author believes that people should be ready for global changes, be open and aware, since changes are inevitable.

The author of this article uses observation and comparison methods that allow determining the essence of distance learning, the danger of pressure on educational institutions, as well as the importance of innovations in education. This article was written by the author in order to create a complete understanding of the phenomenon of distance education in a global context (Traxler). In addition, this article demonstrates the difficulties of distance learning application in conditions of ignorance or isolation. The main audience of this article is teachers, students and parents who want to get acquainted in more detail with the concept of distance learning in a global context. We intend to use this article to learn more about what distance learning is, as well as its goals and objectives.

The Essence of Distance Learning

The main benefit of distance learning is that it allows a person to study anywhere, but requires a computer and the Internet. The material is easily accessible and easy to handle and structure, and it also has all the necessary features that students of higher educational institutions need. In addition, the student is free to build their own individual training schedule, depending on their free time and desire to study (Lassoued et al.). The difference between classical distance learning and its more advanced form is small – the lack of personal communication between students and teachers (Bojović et al.). In this paper, the pros and cons of distance learning will be considered, but first it is required to understand the very essence of distance learning.

In the process of remote learning, students and teachers are at a significant spatial and temporal distance from each other. Teachers use a variety of computer technologies to make the process of remote learning as interesting and useful for students as possible (Schneider and Council). Distance type of education has an important goal-to expand opportunities and provide new services for those people who want to acquire new skills or change their profession. There are six main forms of distance learning, which are the most common.

  • external education;

  • university education;

  • training that involves the cooperation of several educational institutions;

  • creation of specialized institutions where distance classes are held;

  • autonomous learning systems;

  • special multimedia courses that differ in a certain informal component.

At the same time, different technologies are combined: pedagogical, informational, and often andragogic. There is a British synchronous model of distance learning and an American asynchronous one. Distance education is a new, specific form of education, somewhat different from the usual forms of full-time or distance learning (Dietrich et al.). As for the present, the real contingent of potential students can include those who are often on business trips, military personnel, women on maternity leave, and people with physical disabilities. In addition, this category consists of those who want to get additional education with a lack of time. Distance learning has several key characteristics that are important to consider when analyzing this type of learning.

  • flexible and convenient schedule of classes;

Indeed, the effectiveness of distance learning directly depends on those teachers who work with students on the Internet. Such teachers should be psychologically ready to work with students in a new educational and cognitive network environment. Another problem is the infrastructure of student information support in networks. The question of what the structure and composition of the educational material should be remains open. Also, the question is raised about the conditions of access to distance learning courses.

Analyzing the components of distance learning related to the educational institution, they can determine the structure of the network system. It should include educational material submitted in the form of programs, tasks, control and graduation papers, and scientific and practical assistance (Costa et al.). The student should be provided with fundamental printed textbooks, teaching aids, and hypertext multimedia programs (Arthur-Nyarko et al.). Additional materials may include lectures prepared by teachers on disciplines that can be transmitted via the network. In addition, distance learning provides communication in various modes, teacher advice on implementing term papers, theses, or other final work.

The essential component of distance learning is the ability to consider situations that are close to reality. In addition, important elements are creating conditions for the self-realization of students, the disclosure of their potential, the systematic learning process, the individuality of the approach (Bojović et al.). This component is the basis of academic and cognitive activity and affects the quality of distance learning.

Electronic versions of textbooks, which became the basis for the creation of distance courses and traditional books, do not solve the problems of independent activity in obtaining knowledge. These software products only create a virtual learning environment in which distance learning is carried out. Here there are psychological problems, such as inexperience, lack of self-education skills, poor volitional self-regulation, the influence of group attitudes, etc. When developing distance learning programs, it is crucial to carefully plan classes, including each of them with the setting of learning goals and objectives.

If interpersonal communication between students and the teacher is ineffective, there is a possibility of a communication barrier. If this happens, the information is delivered in a distorted form, which leads to the fact that there is a threat of the cognitive barrier growing into a relationship barrier. The barrier of relations turns into a feeling of distrust and hostility towards information and its source.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Distance Learning

There are also many disadvantages in distance learning that should be listed and that cannot be ignored. It is worth starting with technical and methodological problems, including ignoring the psychological laws of perception and assimilation of information using multimedia tools of different modalities. There are also methodological problems, including the complexity of developing electronic versions of traditional educational materials, primarily textbooks and practical manuals.

Many students and experts believe that distance learning has many indisputable and obvious advantages.

  1. A student studying remotely independently plans their schedule and decides how much time to devote to studying.

  2. The opportunity to study anywhere. Students studying remotely are not tied to a place or time, as they only need an Internet connection.

  3. Study on the job from the main activity. Distance learning allows to work or study at several courses at the same time to get additional education.

  4. High learning outcomes. Remote students study the necessary material independently, which allows them to better memorize and assimilate knowledge.

  5. Distance learning is much cheaper, since it does not require expenses for accommodation and travel, as well as for a foreign passport if the university is located abroad.

  6. Remote education provides a calm environment, as exams and communication with teachers are held online, which allows students to avoid anxiety.

  7. Teachers who conduct remote classes have the opportunity to do additional things, cover a larger number of students, as well as teach while, for example, on maternity leave.

  8. Remote learning allows teachers to use a more individual approach to their students, as well as to devote a sufficient amount of time to all students.

Experiments have confirmed that the quality and structure of training courses, as well as the quality of teaching in distance learning is often much better than in traditional forms of education. New electronic technologies can not only ensure the active involvement of students in the educational process, but also allow them to manage this process, unlike most traditional educational environments (Arthur-Nyarko et al.). The interactive capabilities of the programs and information delivery systems used in the distance learning system make it possible to establish and even stimulate feedback. Despite the predominant number of advantages of distance education, this system is not perfect. During the implementation of e-learning programs, the following problems of distance education were identified.

  1. Remote learning requires strong concentration and motivation. Almost all the educational material is mastered by a remote student independently. Remote classes require students to have perseverance and developed patience.

  2. In the process of distance learning, it is difficult to develop interpersonal communication skills, since contact with teachers and other students is minimal.

  3. In the process of distance learning, it is quite difficult to acquire practical skills, thus, specialties that require practical skills suffer.

  4. The problem of user identification. It is difficult to track whether a student wrote their exam honestly, since the only way to check this is video surveillance, which is not always possible.

  5. Insufficient computer literacy. In every country there are remote areas where there is no direct access to the Internet. Moreover, often the residents of such areas do not have any desire to learn, so it is necessary to spread computer literacy.

It is required to start by creating special Internet conferences and forums in schools that would guarantee the relative “live” communication of groups of students to deal with disadvantages (Chen et al.). It is also necessary to cooperate with traditional and distance learning, cooperation between teachers and students using a broad terminological and methodological base of psychology and pedagogy (Abuhammad). Despite all these problems, distance learning is very much appreciated by psychologists and teachers (Traxler). Nevertheless, the complete replacement of traditional education systems with similar ones-distance ones still causes some caution. One thing is indisputable – remotely studying students are more adapted to external conditions, are responsible and active, and therefore more successful in the modern business world.

Conclusion

Speaking about the distance form of education, it is necessary to talk about the creation of a single information and educational space. When it comes to distance learning, it is necessary to understand the presence of a teacher, a textbook and a student in the system, as well as the interaction of a teacher and students. It follows from this that the main thing in the organization of distance learning is the creation of electronic courses, the development of didactic foundations of distance learning, and the training of teachers-coordinators. It is not necessary to identify the distance form with the correspondence form of education, because it provides for constant contact with the teacher and imitation of all types of full-time training.

The dynamism of economic and socio-cultural processes in society causes changes in the field of education. Since the features of distance education are simply not acceptable for many students. Based on psychology and the methodology of independent learning, distance learning has some advantages and disadvantages. Summing up, we can unequivocally answer that distance education has a future. However, much depends on how quickly the problems of eliminating information illiteracy, technical equipment and improving the quality of e-education will be resolved. These factors arise during the implementation of remote scientific programs and projects. So, the factors and examples given above show the need to create and expand distance learning in the United States.

pros and cons distanse learning

Distance learning has been taking over traditional classroom education for years now. This process has advanced and quickened due to the pandemic.

Professional Distance Learning

There are many people for and against it, so let’s see the pros and cons of distance learning and decide which side we are on. Undoubtedly, you’ve seen a lot more ads for webinars, online courses, and other forms of e-learning since the beginning of the pandemic. It has become a massively popular way of learning new things.

These two concepts are interconnected, but they are not the same. When you hear ‘distance learning, think of the location. When you hear ‘e-learning’, think of Internet connection.

In distance learning, students and teachers are physically separated, which is not necessarily the case in e-learning. In e-learning, students and teachers use electronic media (often the Internet), which is not required in distance learning.

If you study with books and show up in college once a semester to take an exam, it is distance learning, not e-learning. Watching an online lecture in class is e-learning, but it is not distance learning. If you take an online course or join a webinar, this is both distance learning and e-learning.

These two concepts overlap so often in today’s world that many scholars use them interchangeably. For this article, we will follow their lead and blend the two. We will focus on distance e-learning and webinars in particular.

Pros of Distance Learning for Students

Here is why you should choose distance learning:

  • Flexibility in time and space. A friendly environment makes learning more effective.
  • It’s easier to stay in touch with your tutor/professor.
  • Distance learning is less stressful.
  • It’s suitable for shy people and introverts.
  • Long-term savings.
  • Higher educational value.

Let’s go over them in detail one by one.

Flexibility in Time and Space

Most online courses are self-paced, which allows you to create your timetable. Even webinars, an asynchronous (in real-time) type of learning, can be watched later. It is convenient only for free-spirited souls that do not want to be constrained by some arbitrary schedules. It is an optimal (if not the only) solution for people with jobs, families, or other adult responsibilities.

Distance learning has also been a lifeline for every ambitious person living in a rural area. Many US high school students got a chance to take more challenging AP classes, specifically thanks to e-learning. Many foreigners can now study at top American universities without having to leave their home country. And what about those people who can’t attend class due to illness? Distance learning has genuinely been a potent force in bringing equality to the world.

Employers use e-learning to standardize knowledge and skills among employees who live in different countries. Through webinars, they can provide training, exert managerial control or organize monthly meetings with hundreds of people at the same time. Distance learning has become indispensable in the age of globalization.

A friendly environment is also a vital part of learning. It’ll be easier and more pleasurable for you if you choose the place to study in – it can be your room or the café you love the most. It’s up to you which is convenient. If you concentrate better in silence, it’s possible with distance learning. The same goes for studying your favorite music.

Studying by yourself makes you understand that you can learn new things all your life, not only at school or university. There are so many online courses, all of them waiting for you. It’s so easy because all you have to do is have a device and an Internet connection. You can do it any time, even if you’re six or seventy – it truly doesn’t matter now.

It’s Easier to Stay in Touch with your Tutor/Professor

Usually, the only way to contact your tutor or professor is to write an email or meet them directly. It could take a long time. Thanks to all the platforms and social media, you can contact them via chat, video, or audio. Sometimes, you’ll even know when they’re active and ready to answer your questions.

Distance Learning is Less Stressful

Anyone who attended an online meeting could say that. Not being present next to a large (or even smaller) group of people, but sitting in your room or office, tricks the mind, and you feel a lot more relaxed and ready to take part in the discussion.

It’s less stressful for children as well. They don’t have to stay up early, an hour or two before the lesson, so they’ll be less sleepy. It means better concentration and readiness for learning new things. There’s another factor – everyone remembers how stressful it is to be called out, mainly when unprepared. Distance learning will take it away and ensure more friendly conditions for studying.

It’s suitable for shy people and introverts

Shy people often don’t dare to ask questions if they don’t understand something. Or, they’d love to ask for something that interests them, but they find themselves unable to do that. Distance learning makes it possible. For many people, it’s easier to ask or be active in general via chat. Thanks to the safety, they feel being in a place they like and are more likely to find the courage to do what they couldn’t find the courage for. Also, distance learning makes it possible to listen to courses or lessons online since many of them are recorded.

Long-term Savings

According to Best Colleges, 40% of those entering an online program want to change their career. At the same time, they do not want to quit their current job to go to a traditional college (again). They opt for more flexible and relatively inexpensive distance learning to avoid the opportunity and financial loss. It allows them to test various career options without having to burn bridges.

When you study at home, you get rid of less obvious expenses such as parking, gas, cafés, etc. These may seem inconsequential, but they do add up in the end. Eliminating such small charges will save you a fortune in the long term.

Higher Educational Value

Research revealed that talented students fare much better in an online course than in a standard classroom. They are not forced to neglect their studies so that others can keep up. They can do everything at their usual pace.

Slower students, on the other hand, can take their time to understand the material. They can re-watch the lectures whenever they want or even retake the course later without losing the money. Their progress is kept safe, so they do not have to do everything from scratch if they decide to do the course later.

Let’s take webinars as an example of e-learning. With them, it does not matter where you sit in the classroom: you can hear your teacher just as well as hundreds of your peers. It does not matter what eyesight you’ve got: teachers will usually share the screen with presentations and all the supplemental materials.

It doesn’t matter if you are shy; there is no need to raise your hand, as you can leave an instant message to a presenter. All these advanced tools really help level the field for hundreds of students around the globe. They also allow teachers to save time on activities such as grading and focus more on their students.

Cons of Distance Learning for Students

Distance Learning

Despite all the amazing advantages, e-learning is not devoid of drawbacks. Here are some of them:

  • Student isolation.
  • The danger of procrastination.
  • Lack of practice.
  • Lack of validity.

Student Isolation

Distance learning is often performed in isolation. It prevents students from forming lasting relationships with their peers and professors, which is detrimental to their mental health. This also often prevents them from quickly correcting their mistakes: many online teachers take quite some time to answer in forums. That is why webinars are a better type of e-learning: instant messages allow students to improve immediately.

Danger of Procrastination

You usually need much motivation to finish an online course or watch all webinars. Because e-learning is not obligatory, many tend to default to it. Many also tend to underestimate this type of learning, thinking that it is something easy. And when it’s not, they quit. If you want to persevere with your webinar or MOOC, you will need to find time and strong motivation for it. Otherwise, it won’t work.

Lack of Practice

The majority of people learn best by practice, and distance learning often makes it less possible to practice something with a group or, for example, in a laboratory. Only by doing something yourself, you’ll get the certainty that you have the necessary skills. Your tutor won’t be able to see the results of your work unless you send it through the platforms you’re using.

Lack of Validity

E-learning may yield you a certificate, but it rarely provides a full-fledged degree. Many online universities are either not accredited or simply not recognized by employers. More than 60% of US students, who do e-learning full-time, are enrolled in for-profit colleges. These private schools are generally known for the bad quality of their education.

Pros of Distance Learning for Organizers

Remember that every piece of knowledge you get needs to be repeated. This way, your knowledge would be consolidated. Distance learning makes this repetition much easier for you, as a tutor/professor, to execute. You can share teaching materials, like presentations and files on your platform. It’s effortless. What other pros can you find in distance learning?

How to make your webinar/course more interactive?

It’s More Effective

You can prepare files like audio, video, presentations, documents, or images for your students. They’ll be able to check them out anytime, which is really convenient, not only for them but for you as well. You share it once for everyone.

Read this article and get to know how to make distance learning more effective here.

Easier to Track the Progress

It’s much easier to track your student’s progress on distance learning. You can do it by assigning some tasks or doing little quizzes. It can even be fun for the students since many platforms make it look more like a game (for example, Kahoot).

It Saves the Money

If you’re preparing courses or training for many people or companies with a significant employee turnover, distance learning will be much more convenient. You won’t have to pay for accommodation, a training room, and tutors every time. You can use recorder training or make a webinar, but you would still skip the accommodation and training room cost.

No One Will Be Late

You won’t have to explain how to get to the training room. There’ll be no problem with someone being late because of the traffic. People will get the notification and turn up on time.

Cons of the Distance Learning for Organizers

There are a couple of cons to this kind of education. Not every tutor is an expert when it comes to technology. They could feel lost in the sea of features that online learning platforms offer. They could even feel lost when it comes to using a computer, so you have to keep that in mind.

Lecturers Need to Learn How to Use the Platform

It’s an essential part of distance learning. Lecturers need to know how to use the platform and how to make it look good, and they especially need to realize that the technical part of online learning has a pivotal role in it. It’s also crucial for them to know how to hold their audience’s attention.

It’s definitely harder to build authority in online learning, and a good leader is essential in learning new things. So, the tutor needs to find a way to build that authority.

See here how to engage the students and participants of the course.

But you should not discard e-learning because of the few rotten apples. It’s not perfect, but very often, it’s more practical and valuable than your local college. Wouldn’t you instead learn from a person working in the field rather than an academic? Webinars attract experts as well as people yearning to become one. So, don’t miss your chance to become a professional without having to get out of bed.

Pros And Cons Of Online Studying
More and more people today support the idea of studying from home, instead of actual attendance of schools or universities. It is very convenient, on the one hand.
However, the question of online studying as every other topic has its pros and cons. Since the computer was invented, people knew they would be able to do some jobs with the help of it. All the data has been automatically stored in electronic format. It was much easier to keep the information on discs than in huge files. As the Internet was invented, things have become even easier.
From now on, people could exchange information in the blink of an eye. Soon it was clear that many things can be done online, for example, instant communication or video chatting. The later was especially handy in terms of studying.
There are thousands of courses in numerous disciplines nowadays. It is especially convenient to study foreign languages, economics, biology, history, social science, psychology online. It is also important to mention that there are a few ways to get education from home. One can study with the help of such messengers like skype. In this case, the tutor and student can have video contact. There is also an option to study simply with the help of online notes, i.e. reading e-books and doing online exercises.
One of the main assets of distant learning is that people can choose how much time they want to dedicate to it and when. They are also allowed to use various computer programs while doing their home tasks.
The disadvantage of e-learning, in my opinion, is the absence of group communication. However, I’m sure this is also being fixed. So, if I was asked to choose the type of studying, I would probably go with the one online.

What Are The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Distance Education? We will consider and evaluate them one by one. Because it is necessary to eliminate unwarranted worries in the minds. Because one of the most intriguing subjects of recent years is Distance Education. You know, with the Coronavirus Pandemic, restriction decisions have been made worldwide. Quarantine processes have been activated. Companies shut down. The business world has moved on to work from home plans. Digitalization has started to affect the whole world rapidly. Of course, the education system could not stay out of it. Schools are closed. However, education should not have stopped. For this reason, taking urgent measures came up. At this point, Distance Education has become more on the agenda than ever before.

Advantages of Distance Education

Flexibility in Time

The biggest advantage of distance education is time flexibility. Participants can directly decide for themselves when and at which venue they will attend the classes. Moreover, while continuing to work in any workplace. At the same time, it is a very suitable education model for those who want to receive distance education.

Easy Access

Distance Education programs offer participants the opportunity to receive training in the most comfortable place without leaving their home or office environment. The system is also extremely advantageous for international institutions. Universities, trade schools, and private educational institutions around the world now offer worldwide certificates. You can easily access and participate wherever you are in the world. You can also register for any course. You can start a second course while continuing the training. All these features are differences that never exist in face-to-face education.

Lower Costs

The Distance Education method reduces the high costs of education to almost zero. Take, for example, a 4-year faculty that you earned in Digital Marketing. In these 4 years, you will have many expenses such as university fees, travel money, food and beverage expenses, accommodation expenses, kitchen and rent expenses if you rented a house, educational materials. When you calculate all these expenses for 4 years, a huge amount of money will emerge. However, there are none of these costs in the distance education method. You only pay for the training package you will receive. This fee will most likely be reduced. Let’s consider the fact that nowadays everyone has the internet and computers in their homes. You will experience the comfort of getting high-level education for a very low fee.

Easier Access to Information

The existence of distance education programs has made learning much easier today. This can never be ignored. Modern time is an information age. Also, people are not afraid to spend money to get the right information. This is very nice. Because it is their right to access information. Digital technology is a great blessing people will use this right to the fullest. People need new information to keep up with changing times. Online education, in short, e-learning platforms seem like medicine to these people. You will never find the comfort of being a social media expert in a short time like a few months in traditional training methods.

Opportunity to Learn While Working

The distance education model is flexible in all respects. You can enroll in a distance education program and study even while working full time. This feature is one of the most striking aspects of distance learning. You are at work. It was afternoon. You can follow your lessons while eating. This is undoubtedly a great blessing. You do not have such an opportunity in traditional education methods.

Individual Approach

In traditional teaching, it is quite difficult for the educator to pay the necessary attention to all students and adapt to the pace of each of them. However, the use of web technologies, ie the distance education method, is more suitable for organizing individual approaches. Although the participant can choose their own learning speed, they can get support from the instructor quickly.

Disadvantages of Distance Education

As in many subjects, there may be some disadvantages in distance education. However, let’s note that. These are limited as personal problems and can be corrected. For example, while attending the lesson at home, the household members listen to loud music. Such situations never overshadow the wonderful benefits of distance education. However, let’s take a look at the disadvantages.

Strong Motivation and Discipline

Almost all training materials are managed by the participants themselves. This will require enhanced will, responsibility, and self-control. Therefore, individuals who cannot achieve this control may have problems in learning.

Lack of Practical Knowledge

It is difficult to teach specialties remotely, which require lots of practical exercises. Even the most modern simulators do not replace future doctors or teachers. Absolutely face-to-face for practical applications, touching the material (eg lifeless mannequin for a surgery application) However, with the further development of technology, this is a problem. it will be greatly overcome in a short time and time.

Certificate Validity

Sometimes, the validity of a certificate obtained through online training or the reliability of the instructors may not be sufficient. Therefore, it would be a good idea to review the credentials of the instructor and the user comments of the distance education institution you plan to attend. To ensure the best quality and reliability, it is recommended that you choose experts and reputable institutions in their field.

As mentioned above, despite these few drawbacks, online training platforms are a great comfort to acquire new generation professions. You might think that there is no exact alternative to normal education. But remember that the world has changed completely. Digitalization has affected all life. Therefore, it is necessary to keep up with this. Otherwise, time and developing technology will be left behind and many problems will be in question.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Distance Learning

Distance education is a concept that has gained significant popularity over the past few years. Distance learning programs have helped many students who are unable to attend campus-based or full-time courses to realize their educational aspirations. With distance education, learning instruction is disseminated over the internet through an online learning portal or video conference software. Such video conference software as ezTalks Cloud Meeting offer robust tools that can help instructors deliver full lessons to students from all over the world. But just like any other education program, distance learning comes with a set of pros and cons.

Distance learning might not be the best choice for every student seeking to pursue a college degree or university program. Thus understanding its advantages and drawbacks can help one decide on whether or not it is the right program to pursue.

Advantages of Distance Learning

1. Greater Flexibility. With distance learning programs, students can pursue and complete their desired courses from anywhere with the use of computer and internet connection. A larger percentage of those that enroll for distance education are actually persons who are working. Distance education allows such students to find convenient time to study without interfering with their already busy schedule. One can study after work, in the middle of the night or during weekends. Learning materials and instruction can actually be obtained online at any time. So working students can learn as they earn.

2. No commuting. Distance learning takes place online, which means students don’t need to spend money and time commuting to and from class venues. Students can take lessons and complete assignments from the comfort of their home. Most institutions that offer distance learning programs deliver lectures and tutorials through online video conferencing. That means students don’t have to be stuck to the classroom. One can actually enjoy class sessions from the comfort of their living room couch, bedroom or garden. Video conferencing solutions like ezTalks Cloud Meeting offer innovative whiteboards and screen/file sharing options that make classes more interactive. Its full HD video and audio experience duplicates the real-life class scenario that makes online lectures more meaningful.

3. Significant Cost Savings. The cost of online-based education programs is generally lower compared to those offered in brick-and-mortar institutions. Undertaking an online course or program also eliminates the costs associated with commuting, renting an apartment and/or getting meal plans. That means distance learning an economically viable option for both students and parents. Apart from the convenience of pursuing a course from home, students will have a perfect opportunity to save more on their studies.

4. Convenient Learning. For most of the working class students, going back to the classroom is rather intimidating. Asking questions about a hard concept about a given topic can also be embarrassing for shy students. But that’s not the case with distance learning. A disciplined and self-motivated student can learn at his or her own pace. Online education combines the use of tutorials, eLearning materials and video conference class sessions to deliver knowledge to students. That means learners with different abilities can have the opportunity to understand the course in much detail.

Disadvantages of Distance Learning

1. Lack of Social Interaction. Learning in a brick-and-mortar institution presents students with the opportunity to meet and interact with people from different locations on a personal level. Distance learning only limits students to classes and learning materials that are based online. Though students can interact through chat rooms, discussion boards, emails and/or video conferencing software, the experience cannot be compared to that of a traditional campus.

2. High Chances of Distraction. With no face-to-face interaction with instructors and other students, those who are enrolled on an online program might find it hard to keep track of their course work and assignments. That’s because there are no constant reminders about pending assignments and/or deadlines. It only requires one to be self-motivated and focused to be able to complete a course successfully. Hence distance learning cannot be a good option for students who keep procrastinating things or those who aren’t able to stick to deadlines.

3. Complicated Technology. Any student seeking to enroll for a distance learning program needs to invest in a range of equipment including computer, webcam and stable internet connection. There is absolutely no physical contact between students and instructors as instruction is delivered over the internet. This overdependence on technology is a major drawback to distance learning. In case of any software or hardware malfunction, the class session will come to a standstill, something that can interrupt the learning process. Moreover, the complicated nature of the technology used in distance learning only limits online education to students who are computer and tech savvy.

4. Questionable Credibility of Online Degrees. Despite its convenience and affordability, distance learning is still not the best option for many due to lack of lack of quality faculty members. Even when the instructors are fully qualified and experienced, they might not find it comfortable to teach in an online environment. The design and delivery of every course differs greatly. Sometimes the instructor might find little time to talk about trivial details of a given topic, which are otherwise important to helping students understand better a given concept. That, plus a host of other challenges like lack of proper assessment make credibility of distance learning degrees questionable.

As a matter of fact, there many employers out there who do not accept online degrees as they still find stigma attached to distance education. That means students have to evaluate whether or not their online degrees can be ideal for the target job or future learning. This discourages many students from undertaking a distance learning program even when the degree being offered is genuine and competitive in the market.

Conclusion. Despite its numerous drawbacks, distance learning still provides better learning options for students wishing to enjoy greater convenience and flexibility in pursuing a course. The greatest benefits of distance education is that it allows students to access numerous learning tools using minimum financial resources. Studying online is even made more interactive with the use of video conferencing software. That improves the ability to acquire and retain knowledge on a given subject.

However, distance education limits social interaction, involves useof complex technology and has a negative perception among some employers. Any student wishing to enroll for distance learning diploma or degree should weigh between its pros and cons to determine whether or not it’s a good option. Generally, distance education can be the perfect option for working students.

Education is very important nowadays. We want to have a prestigious job in future, nice salary, good career and friendly management. That’s why after school we try to attend university, look for different courses or private teachers. More different classes you attend better qualification you will have. In general it’s not easy to go to work and study at the same time. That’s why today there are many possibilities to study at home. What is more you can do it any comfortable time for you.

I would like to try distance learning. Basically you can have a schedule when you have to pass all the exams and tests. Rest time is all yours. If you are well-organized person you can handle with the schedule. You can have even excellent results and pass exams very well. I am sure that distance learning is the best form of education. Also you can attend any course you like from any university. Let’s say you live in a small town and you have no possibility to go in a bigger city. Distance learning is an excellent option for you.

But there are also minuses in distance learning and for many people they are important. Unfortunately for some people it’s difficult to organize their day. When you don’t have to study regularly it’s not easy to start. So some of us need a strict schedule to study every day. Distance learning gives you freedom to choose how to study and when to study. Also some organizations don’t recognize the certificate that we get after distance learning. But I think that our knowledge is much more important for employer. And of course there are people who start the course, but after one year 20-30% of students leave the course.

In general distance education is very useful. Many students found good job after these courses and today they feel happy.

Many people doubt whether distance learning is effective and worthy or not. The contemporary world is changing so fast that a person has to adapt to the new circumstances. One should cope with household chores, studies, money earning, the upbringing of children, and a number of other things. How to manage to succeed in all life spheres? Distance education allows a person to become a professional and have more time for personal things such as a hobby, family, entertainment, and work.

Pros and Cons of Distance Learning

Today there are a variety of methods and types of distance learning. You should be aware of all the pros and cons of such education methods and we will tell you about the top advantages and disadvantages of distance education.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Distance Learning 1

Benefits You May Experience

Let’s start with the positive features of distance education.

  1. You are not to worry about the schedule because you can fix the time and number of your classes with tutors.
  2. One can earn one’s living and study at the same time.
  3. A student may not attend classes at a college and have online lectures.
  4. Distance learning is always cheaper than traditional courses.
  5. There is no need to waste money on the commute.
  6. A person can get academic assignments and requirements online. By the way, senior students can turn to a service that writes essays for students which will help with successful task completion.
  7. You may complete a course from anywhere as there are no geographical boundaries.

Cons You May Suffer

Even if you save your time and money, you may undergo the following disadvantages when preferring distance learning:

  • Sometimes it is hard to clear out some issues and it will not be easy to get personalized attention from the tutor.
  • A number of employers consider distance education to be not worthy of their attention.
  • You are to possess excellent computer skills and know everything about the required programs.
  • A person does not feel like being a student and lacks communication and campus atmosphere.
  • A distance student should look for inspiration and motivation to start and finish a piece of work.
  • No opportunity for comparison and better self-realization because of lack of rivalry.

Distance Learning Survey

The questionnaire and latest researches show that more than 86 percent of American students managed to get their online education successfully in 2018. They managed to achieve their prior goal because they had time not only for their studies but for the realization of other vitally important aims. Students had more chances to practice their skills, support their families, devote some time to their friends, and look for the job they needed.

To conclude, online learning is gaining popularity and is becoming more prestigious due to innovations, better programs, and the availability of various facilities.

Nowadays more and more people are spending time on line and many have a personal computer at home. Thanks to the Internet, students have access to many different websites to help them learn. However, there are arguments for and against learning online.

There is no doubt that e-learning is a convenient way to learn. The first advantage is that people who normally have difficulty finding time to go to lessons can learn at home. People do not have to be in a certain place at a certain time. This means that students can save time and money on travel as they do not commute to school.

Another advantage is that students can learn at their own paсе. People can choose when and for how long they want to study. As a result, learning can be more rewarding and enjoyable.

Yet, there are drawbacks to learning online. One drawback is that it can be lonely studying alone. With e-learning there is no chance to meet other people and share ideas with, so It Is difficult to motivate yourself. Moreover, without a teacher to help you, you may feel lost.

However, the main disadvantage against online learning is that it depends too much on technology. Computer problems can make people miss lessons. As a result, students can fall behind.

All in all, while learning online is a welcome development. It cannot replace traditional learning at school as people need contact with others in order to learn effectively. However, students can benefit if they learn both at school and online.

7 Read the rubric. Which of the statements (1-5) are arguments for and which are arguments against? Match them to.

Your English teacher has asked you to write an essay on the advantages and disadvantages of e-learning.

Because of rapid advances of modern technology school and university students of different ages have a possibility to attend classes staying at home. The global pandemic of coronavirus has proved it, whether we like it or not. Although most people agree that this is the only way to continue education without leaving the house, many fear that online learning will replace the traditional school teaching.

The most important benefits of online learning are: it can have a flexible schedule; students can work independently; it is more convenient for students who are pursuing education at an older age.

The weaknesses of studying online are: it is considered to be of lower quality than traditional education; staying motivated and keeping up with assignments is often more difficult; online students do not get the one-on-one interaction with their teachers.

In conclusion, I can say that although technically it’s possible to get education online, I prefer traditional form of learning at school as it is more than just getting knowledge. For me it is also a way of learning to interact with others, to socialize and make friends.
