Scientists have made robots to help old people to move and to serve them, to clean houses and to play with children. These technologies are really useful today and in future. The technologies that help and make our life easier are always important and useful.

Another great technology is a coffee machine. But the one that can prepare all kind of coffee, has different regimes and can control even the time.

Headphones, computers and mobile phones also make our life so much easier. Thank to them we can do few things at the same time. We are able to communicate with our friends and family even if they are far away.

New technologies come out very often. Sometime we don’t even pay attention because we get used to the old things. Like iPhone produces new models of the phones every year. But the difference between them is not so big.

People have to be more flexible. Then we can manage with any new thing that comes to our life. It’s important if you use it regularly your life can really change and to become better.

All modern offices are equipped with computers, scanners, printers, and other useful machines. One of the most important devices today is the wi-fi modem as it provides Internet. Secondly, technologies surround us at home, in cars and everywhere.

There are many people who are against new technologies. In my opinion, technological progress has made our lives more interesting and bright. Thanks to computers and Internet I find more educational resources. Such electronic items as vacuum-cleaner, washing machine, microwave, dish washer, blender and some others have made my mum’s life easier.

So I’m sure that new technologies are for good. In conclusion, I’d like to say, that technological progress continues and it moves rather fast. Thus, I think that soon we will live in ‘smart’ houses with robots doing all housework instead of us.

Today, people simply can’t imagine life without these machines. However, it isn’t always healthy to use them for a long time. Sitting long hours in front of the computer leads to eyesight and back problems. Cell phones contain negative vibes that affect human organism. So, many health specialists are against the excessive use of cell phones.

Household appliances and machines that make people’s life easier often lead to idleness and obesity. Modern offices are full of self-operating machines. That’s why some jobs are disappearing and people stay unemployed.

Later on we go to have breakfast, we prepare a toast in a toaster, take yogurt from the fridge and make coffee with a coffee machine. Then we take a car or a bus and go to work or school or university. When we need to contact somebody we take a mobile phone. And every thing is a technology from the past. Just today it has become for us a normal life.

For us, young people, technologies today are Apple watches, last model of the phone, some super machine that can cook and clean. Anyway we should remember that technologies are always around us.

I can’t imagine my life today without them. The life would be difficult, boring and just impossible. Technologies today cure us, we get education thank to technologies, explore galaxy and new planet. Who knows maybe in future technologies will help us to live forever.

But sometimes technologies can be dangerous. Guns, bombs and other stuff that people use to ruin and destroy. I think technologies must be used only to help people and to improve the life of our planet and nature.

That’s why I hope that in future technologies will help us to have peace in the whole world, to cure cancer and AIDS, to invent medicine of youth and of course to save our planet from global problems. But we have to remember that technologies help us to grow and develop, but people should be always a priority. People and peace are important, not money, power and technologies.

We live in the era of high technologies, and we use modern inventions in our everyday life because they have brought us much comfort. New technologies have spread on every field over the past 15 years. Moreover, they are rapidly changing. For example, video-recorders, DVD-players or compact disks have already become obsolete and have been replaced by more up-to-date devices. Today we can hardly imagine our life without such modern mobile devices as cell phones or laptops. Our offices are fully equipped with computers, printers, scanners, air-conditioners, interactive whiteboards and wi-fi modems. Household appliances (vacuum-cleaners, coffee-machines, dish-washers, food processors and others) help us to save our time and energy.

However, we should realize that digital and electronic inventions have both negative and positive impact on our daily life.

I am absolutely positive that new technologies or gadgets are making things faster, easier, more comfortable and interesting. For instance, if you install a GPS (Global Positioning System) in your car you’ll never get lost again. And could we imagine just 15 years ago all the things we can do on the wireless Internet nowadays: connecting with friends from all over the world, online shopping and banking, distance online learning, finding virtual relationships and even working from home? Isn’t that awesome?! Our parents used to go to post-offices to send letters or pay bills, they went to libraries to find a good book and they used telephone-booths for phone-calls.

On the other hand, I know some people who are strongly against some modern inventions because they really miss those days when they talked to each other face to face in reality, and not virtually. I partially agree with that as I really believe that people are becoming anti-social and too dependent on their gadgets. Some of my friends also spend half of the time occupying their shiny gadgets (smart-phones or i-pads) even when we go out together. Besides, people who use various social networks a lot (such as Facebook or Instagram) should worry more about their privacy.

Summing up, I could say that there are serious arguments both for and against the use of new technologies but anyway it’s really difficult to imagine our life without them today.

Мы живем в эпоху высоких технологий и пользуемся современными изобретениями в повседневной жизни, поскольку они принесли нам много комфорта. Новые технологии распространились в каждой области за последние 15 лет. Более того, они стремительно меняются. Например, видеомагнитофоны, DVD-плееры или компакт-диски стали уже устаревшими, и им на смену пришли более современные устройства. Сегодня мы с трудом можем представить нашу жизнь без таких современных мобильных приборов, как сотовые телефоны или ноутбуки. Наши офисы полностью оборудованы компьютерами, принтерами, сканерами, кондиционерами, интерактивными досками и wi-fi модемами. Бытовые приборы (пылесосы, кофе-машины, посудомоечные машины, кухонные комбайны и другие) помогают нам экономить время и энергию.

Однако, нам следует понимать, что цифровые и электронные изобретения имеют как отрицательное, так и положительное влияние на нашу повседневную жизнь.

Я полностью согласен с тем, что новые технологии или гаджеты делают многие вещи быстрее, легче, удобнее и интереснее. К примеру, если вы устанавливаете в своем автомобиле GPS (Глобальную Навигационную Систему), вы больше никогда не заблудитесь. А могли ли мы представить всего лишь 15 лет назад все то, что можем делать сегодня по беспроводному интернету: связь с друзьями по всему миру, онлайн покупки и банковские операции, дистанционное онлайн обучение, поиск виртуальных знакомств и даже работу из дома? Разве это не здорово?! Наши родители раньше отправлялись в почтовое отделение для того, чтобы отсылать письма или оплачивать счета, они ходили в библиотеки для того, чтобы найти хорошую книгу и пользовались телефонными будками для того, чтобы позвонить.

С другой стороны, я знаю людей, которые категорически против некоторых современных изобретений, так как им очень не хватает тех дней, когда они общались друг с другом, лицом к лицу в реальности, а не виртуально. Частично я согласен с этим, потому что я считаю, что люди становятся анти-социальными и слишком зависимыми от своих гаджетов. Некоторые мои друзья также посвящают половину времени своим блестящим гаджетам (смартфонам или ай-пэдам), даже когда мы выходим вместе погулять. Кроме того, людям, которые много пользуются социальными сетями (такими, как Фэйсбук или Инстарграм), нужно побеспокоиться о защите своей личной информации.

Подводя итог, я бы сказал, что существуют серьезные аргументы за и против использования новых технологий, но, в любом случае, в наши дни уже будет очень сложно представить жизнь без них.

Innovation and technology shaped Western civilization. One of the best examples is the technology and innovation applied to the creation of large ships. These ships were used to discover new worlds. As a result, Europeans were able to travel beyond the European continent.

The foray into exotic lands enabled Europeans to acquire exotic products, raw materials, and slaves (Cole and Symes 265). The technology and innovation utilized during the Medieval Age had a profound impact on Western Civilization. However, the technology and innovation that was available during the Medieval Age paled in comparison to the technology and innovation that brought forth the Industrial Revolution.

Bringing Forth the Industrial Revolution

The people living in the Western world were stuck in the innovation and technology that was available in the Medieval Age. They needed a catalyst in order to surpass the achievements of the Medieval Age. Thus, it can be argued that without the Renaissance, it is impossible to imagine the possibility of an Industrial Revolution.

One of the major breakthroughs during the Renaissance period was the discovery of a higher form of mathematics (Romanek 14). Before the Renaissance, Europeans utilized the Roman numeral system. It was a cumbersome system. It prevented mathematicians from branching out into algebra, calculus, trigonometry, and physics.

These are branches of science that are needed to create steam engines, railway systems, and the equipment needed to construct modern factories. However, the discovery of Hindu-Arabic short form method allowed mathematicians like Rene Descartes to describe the size and shape of objects using mathematical expressions (Romanek 14) The ability to manipulate mathematical equations enabled inventors to create steam engines and railway systems. These modern inventions paved the way for the Industrial Revolution.

The Impact of the Railways

The Industrial Revolution can be described as the application of new technology to transform raw materials into useful commodities (Derry and Williams 259). It must be made clear that the major difference is the type of commodities that were produced. At the same time, there was considerable less dependence on manual labor. This revelation inspired historians to comment that the initial impact of the Industrial Revolution was to help ease the suffering of laborers.

According to one commentary, the technology available to them “tend to relieve the workmen either from niceties of adjustment which exhaust his mind and fatigue his eyes or from the painful repetition of efforts which distort or wear out his frame” (Ure 1). As a result, there was a great demand for manufactured products. However, the increase in demand requires greater access to resources.

The steam engine enabled workers to produce more. But the concept had to evolve into locomotives and railways before the impact of the Industrial Revolution was felt throughout the Western World.

From the year 1840 to the 1900s there was a race between European countries that attempted to build the most extensive railway system in the world (Halsall 1) Those who participated were labeled as industrialized nations, and the names of the countries are listed as follows: 1) Austria-Hungary; 2) Belgium; 3) France; 4) Germany; 5) Great Britain; 6) Italy; 7) Netherlands; 8) Russia; 9) Spain; and 10) Sweden (Halsall 1). By the year 1900 Russia and Germany are the top two countries with the most extensive railway system in the world.

The combination of innovations in steam engine and railway system technology revolutionized the transportation of people, raw materials and finished products. According to one commentary:

They are an effect because the steam engine made possible new modes of transport by sea, land, and air. But the new means of transport were also a cause of industrial change. Without them bulky and heavy materials – could never have been concentrated for manufacture, nor could the food found for the manufacturing population (Derry and Williams 364).

The application of innovation and technology paved the way for the mass production of commodities. As a result, businessmen were able to produce products in the most cost-efficient manner. These products are now affordable because these are mass-produced. At the same, there was greater demand for these products. Greater demand for finished products also means greater demand for workers.

One of the least anticipated outcomes of the Industrial Revolution was the creation of large urban centers in a short period of time. The United States was a newcomer compared to its European counterparts. However, the negative impact of the Industrial Revolution was just the same in American cities.

According to a researcher, “As more and more people moved to America’s cities to take advantage of all these opportunities, the character of the United States changed. America was no longer a land dominated by farmers, but one dominated by city dwellers living off wages” (Sakolsky 7).

The modern world saw the phenomenal growth of cities that struggled to support millions of people inside a limited land area with limited resources. The increased manufacturing activity and the movement of people contributed to the destruction of the environment and the needless exploitation of natural resources.

One of the unintended consequences was the creation of cheap products that end up in dumpsters. Businessmen manufactured products in anticipation of demand. In many instances, their predictions did not come true. In the Medieval Age, a blacksmith will never produce knives and plowshares without a clear idea of the demand for such products.

Although the Industrial Revolution brought unexpected problems, the positive impact must not be understated. The Industrial Revolution paved the way for globalization. It paved the way for the creation of efficient machines and high-quality products. Consider the impact of modern sea navigation and the emergence of the modern airline industry. It is now easier and safer to travel long distances.

Furthermore, the Industrial Revolution paved the way for the Information Age. The Industrial Revolution enabled European and North American countries to dominate global affairs. This was made evident by the participation of Western superpowers in World War I and World War II. The emergence of Western superpowers was made possible by the extensive railway networks that were established during the period covering the Industrial Revolution.

Conclusion

The Industrial Revolution had a profound effect on Western civilization. A civilization that was once dominated by rural communities and agricultural practices was suddenly engulfed by the positive and negative impacts of radical technological advances. Due to the application of innovations in the steam engine and railway technology, large urban centers were created almost overnight. It brought about overpopulation and the destruction of the natural environment.

However, the Industrial Revolution paved the way for the creation of new forms of technologies that made life easier. For example, it is now easier and safer to travel long distances due to improvements in sea navigation and air travel. The Industrial Revolution paved the way for the Information Age. The Industrial Revolution made it possible for industrial countries in Europe and North America to dominate global affairs. Thus, the Industrial Revolution had a profound impact on the shaping of the Western world.
