The poisoning of the world’s land, air, and water is the fastest spreading disease of civilisation. It probably produces fewer headlines than wars, earthquakes and floods, but it is potentially one of history’s greatest dangers to human life on earth. If present trends continue for the next several decades, our planet will become uninhabitable.

Overpopulation, pollution and energy consumption have created such planet wide problems as massive deforestation, ozone depletion, acid rains and the global warming that is believed to be caused by the greenhouse effect.

The seas are in danger. They are filled with poison: industrial and nuclear waste, chemical fertilisers and pesticides. The Mediterranean is already nearly dead; the North Sea is following. The Aral Sea is on the brink of extinction. If nothing is done about it, one day nothing will be able to live in the seas.

Every ten minutes one kind of animal, plant or insect dies out for ever. If nothing is done about it, one million species that are alive today will have become extinct twenty years from now.

Air pollution is a very serious problem. In Cairo just breathing the air is life threatening- equivalent to smoking two packs of cigarettes a day. The same holds true for Mexico City and 600 cities of the former Soviet Union.

Industrial enterprises emit tons of harmful substances. These emissions have disastrous consequences for our planet. They are the main reason for the greenhouse effect and acid rains.An even greater environmental threat are nuclear power stations. We all know how tragic the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster are.

People are beginning to realise that environmental problems are not somebody else’s. They join and support various international organisations and green parties. If governments wake up to what is happening- perhaps we’ll be able to avoid the disaster that threatens the natural world and all of us with it.

Ecological problems are causing great damage to our environment. Among the most urgent ones are the ozone layer, acid rains, global warming, toxic pollution of atmosphere, disappearance of forests, contamination of underground waters by chemical elements, destruction of soil in some areas, and threat to some flora and fauna representatives.

Types of pollution

The Earth is a home to millions of different kinds of living things, which make up the complex world of nature. Nowadays people try to change their habitats to suit their own needs – to create farmlands or build cities. They create pollution and destroy wildlife habitats by digging the ground up for mining, or by building roads through them. A quarter of all the plants in the world are known to be in a danger or threatened with extinction. There are different types of pollution: water pollution, air pollution, ground pollution and nuclear pollution.

Acid rain

Acid rain falls when poisonous gases from power stations and vehicle exhausts mix with oxygen and moisture in the air. These gases become part of the water cycle and may be carried a long way by the wind before they fall as acid rain, which kills wildlife in lakes, rivers, and forests, and damages the surrounding plant life.

Global warming

World temperatures are currently rising every year. This so called global warming is caused by the building of gases and water vapour in the atmosphere. These gases form a layer that reflects the heat back to Earth. As the planet warms up, the polar ice caps will start to melt. This could cause sea levels to rise and many habitats will disappear under water.

Conclusion

Ecological problems have no borders. However, environment disasters can be avoided if people broaden ecological education and every person understands that the beauty of nature is extremely fragile. Governments must take serious actions against pollution.

The word “Ecol­o­gy” comes from the Greek lan­guage and means “the study of the the place we live in”. So, there is no per­son on Earth who is not affect­ed by eco­log­i­cal prob­lems. For exam­ple, air pol­lut­ed by plants will trav­el for a long dis­tance with wind, the heavy par­ti­cles will get into rivers and seas.

Pol­lu­tion of the sea is the most dan­ger­ous. The regions that are most loaded with sea traf­fic are very dirty. For exam­ple, the Baltic sea is the dirt­i­est zone on the plan­et. The radioac­tive leak at Fukushi­ma, Japan has led to the death of many fish­es and oth­er aquat­ic beings.

The cutout of forests, con­t­a­m­i­na­tion of the seas and intense burn­ing of coal has shift­ed the bal­ance of the oxy­gen, ozone and car­bon diox­ide in the atmos­phere, mak­ing the ozone “shield” of the plan­et thin­ner. It results in glob­al cli­mate changes. Debates are still being held whether the “Glob­al warm­ing” is real, but every year there comes anoth­er evi­dence of the warm­ing — the ice mounts melt at the poles, rais­ing the glob­al sea level.

You, of course, may say that you can’t affect the pro­duc­tion of plants and fac­to­ries much. But there is also the ecol­o­gy of your home and your work­place. You shouldn’t pour dan­ger­ous chem­i­cals to the ground — it will “die”, become infer­tile. Do not throw away bat­ter­ies — send them to the recy­cling cen­ter. There are often spe­cial con­tain­ers for bat­ter­ies in major malls. Gen­er­al­ly, do not waste resources — like take a show­er, not a bath, turn down the water when you brush your teeth. Turn off elec­tric devices that you do not use. Take care of the health of your environment.

Our envi­ron­ment is con­stant­ly chang­ing. This is the fact we can­not deny. The way tech­no­log­i­cal progress influ­ences the envi­ron­ment is not the most favourable.

Today human­i­ty is fac­ing numer­ous envi­ron­men­tal prob­lems. If we do not pay atten­tion to these prob­lems right now, we may face even big­ger nat­ur­al dis­as­ters in the future.

Today CFC’s are banned in many indus­tries. How­ev­er, we must remem­ber that if this prob­lem is not tak­en under con­trol, harm­ful rays of the sun will eas­i­ly pen­e­trate the atmos­phere. The biggest hole in the ozone lay­er is locat­ed above the Antarctic.

Since ancient times Nature has served Man, being the source of his life. For thou­sands of years peo­ple lived in har­mo­ny with envi­ron­ment and it seemed to them that nat­ur­al rich­es were unlim­it­ed. But with the devel­op­ment of civ­i­liza­tion man’s inter­fer­ence in nature began to increase.

Large cities with thou­sands of smoky indus­tri­al enter­pris­es appear all over the world today. The by-prod­ucts of their activ­i­ty pol­lute the air we breathe, the water we drink, the land we grow grain and veg­eta­bles on.

Every year world indus­try pol­lutes the atmos­phere with about 1000 mil­lion tons of dust and oth­er harm­ful sub­stances. Many cities suf­fer from smog. Vast forests are cut and burn in fire. Their dis­ap­pear­ance upsets the oxy­gen bal­ance. As a result some rare species of ani­mals, birds, fish and plants dis­ap­pear for­ev­er, a num­ber of rivers and lakes dry up.

The pol­lu­tion of air and the world’s ocean, destruc­tion of the ozone lay­er is the result of man’s care­less inter­ac­tion with nature, a sign of the eco­log­i­cal crises.

The most hor­ri­ble eco­log­i­cal dis­as­ter befell Ukraine and its peo­ple after the Cher­nobyl tragedy in April 1986. About 18 per­cent of the ter­ri­to­ry of Bye­larus were also pol­lut­ed with radioac­tive sub­stances. A great dam­age has been done to the agri­cul­ture, forests and peo­ple’s health. The con­se­quences of this explo­sion at the atom­ic pow­er-sta­tion are trag­ic for the Ukrain­ian, Byeloruss­ian and oth­er nations.

Envi­ron­men­tal pro­tec­tion is of a uni­ver­sal con­cern. That is why seri­ous mea­sures to cre­ate a sys­tem of eco­log­i­cal secu­ri­ty should be taken.

Some progress has been already made in this direc­tion. As many as 159 coun­tries — mem­bers of the UNO — have set up envi­ron­men­tal pro­tec­tion agen­cies. Numer­ous con­fer­ences have been held by these agen­cies to dis­cuss prob­lems fac­ing eco­log­i­cal­ly poor regions includ­ing the Aral Sea, the South Urals, Kuzbass, Don­bass, Semi­palatin­sk and Chernobyl.

An inter­na­tion­al envi­ron­men­tal research cen­tre has been set up on Lake Baikal. The inter­na­tion­al organ­i­sa­tion Green­peace is also doing much to pre­serve the environment.

But these are only the ini­tial steps and they must be car­ried onward to pro­tect nature, to save life on the plan­et not only for the sake of the present but also for the future generations.

The greenhouse gas emissions have been the primary contributors to global warming. The gas is released from burning of fossils fuels and other unsustainable forms of energy. The environmental consequences of this emission are calamitous in the developing countries. These ranges from heat waves, wildfires, flooding and prolonged droughts. According to the researchers, there is low political will to initiate a massive policy to restrict fossils fuels. Moreover, the effects of carbon emission are not only limited to the atmosphere, but it contributes to other health hazards. Public awareness and participation against carbon emission are essential than pressuring the policymakers for prompt actions.

Potential solution to global warming

The menace of global warming encompasses both the population well-being and ecosystem. The collective approach to ending the vice imperative and obligatory. The transportation industries are the key emitters of greenhouse gas. The second potential contributor is the home energy. Regarding this, certified home energy audit is necessary at the residential home for more efficient energy utilization. Moreover, for the transportation industries, walking or biking is recommended. However, with the modernization and improvement of technology, going electric can help to reduce global warming.

Air, water and soil pollution

According to scientists, forests are carbon sinks which enhance the absorption of emitted carbon gases from the factories. Clearing trees for settlement purposes or otherwise allows the greenhouse gases to escape into the environment thus causing the environmental problems. Other human activities like ranching may also cause deforestation. However, cattle flatulence is a primary source of methane gas, responsible for short term environmental challenges.

Proposed solution to deforestation

Planting trees to support the environment is an essential approach in promoting the clean and safe environment. Secondly, the consumers should avoid using paper towels but instead adopt washable clothes. Finally, the public should be encouraged to boycott products made by Palm Oil companies. This company has contributed to deforestation in many parts of Indonesia and Malaysia.

 IV Example of the body of the essay

With the progress of humanity a lot of environmental problems have appeared. They spoil people’s life, so humans try to overcome them, at least to reduce level of pollution. However, many people think environmental problems are not their concern, and the authorities should take care of nature.

To my mind, if you want to change the world, you should change yourself first. You can talk about environmental problems and not take action. The government cannot solve these issues without support of citizens. First of all, people ought to love and respect wildlife. Besides, they have to be active and responsible for not relying on the government in all cases. For instance, everybody can throw rubbish into bins and use plastic bags several times etc.

 Other people believe only government is able to protect the environment. Firstly, they are sure citizens are not born with the desire to be environmentally friendly. The government has to adopt the laws and make people follow them. Secondly, the government has funds to implement nature-protecting programs.

I cannot agree with this point of view. As for me, despite the good will the authorities are not able to keep an eye on  putting these laws into practice. So they are useless. In addition, the government has other important purposes to spend money as pensions, housing, improving of infrastructure etc.

In conclusion, I want to say that government and citizens should take action together to protect the environment and not to kill themselves.
